How to Organize Kitchen Drawers and Pantry

A well-organized kitchen is easier to cook in. You do not need to buy anything to start, and it helps to organize first and shop second, so that you only buy what the space actually needs.
Start by emptying and sorting
Take everything out of one drawer or shelf at a time. Wipe the surface, then sort what you have into groups: items you use often, items you use occasionally, and items you no longer need. Check pantry items for expiration dates, and set aside anything you will not use.
Group items by use
Keep things where you use them. For example, store cooking utensils near the stove, knives and cutting boards near your prep space, and baking supplies together. Place the things you use every day at an easy height, and keep rarely used items higher up or further back.
Drawers
- Use dividers or trays to keep utensils, tools, and small items from mixing together.
- Store pots and pans vertically or in a single layer where possible, and keep lids in a dedicated spot.
- Choose organizers that fit the drawer’s size, since adjustable or stackable options are more flexible.
Pantry
- Clear, airtight containers let you see what is inside and can help keep dry goods fresh. Our guide to glass and plastic food storage can help you choose.
- Labels make it easier to tell similar items apart.
- Shelf risers and turntables help you reach items at the back or in corners.
- Place newer items behind older ones so that older food gets used first.
- Keep heavy items on lower shelves for safety.
Measure before you buy
Measure the width, depth, and height of your drawers and shelves before shopping for organizers. A container that looks like it will fit may not clear a shelf above it or slide out of a drawer.
Keep it up
Take a few minutes now and then to put things back where they belong and to remove items you no longer use. A system that is simple to maintain tends to last longer than a complicated one.
Specifications and dimensions vary by product, so confirm them with the retailer before you buy.
